We are first and foremost a single team.  While there is room for athletes of all different ability levels, there is no room for the unmotivated, the irresponsible, the disruptive, or the disrespectful athlete.  Athletes who do not take their commitment to this team seriously will have very limited if any success and possibly not be with the team by the end of the season.

Team Definitions , Expectations, and Procedures

Practice:  A set of activities that are designed to help the athlete succeed in the sport of track and field.  A Practice consists of a Warm-Up, a Workout, and a Cool-Down.

Warm-Up:  Activities that are designed to prepare the muscles and cardio-vascular system for the workout.  Unless changed by a coach, the Warm-up consists of a jog (laps dictated by the coaching staff), static stretches, and dynamic stretches, or “dynamics”.  These MUST be done before an athlete can proceed to the Workout.

Workout:  Activities designed to help athletes prepare for competition. They may be for a group of events, or specific to a particular event.  In some instances, an athlete may do two different workouts due to being involved with two different events.

Cool-Down:  A slow jog to help reduce the amount of acid left in the muscles. A Cool-Down can be considered early preparation for the next practice.  A Cool-Down should be finished off with some static stretching.

Participation: In order to have any chance of a successful season, an athlete MUST participate in practice.  All Athletes are expected to be dressed and on time for every practice and meet.  Practice days, times and locations will be given in advance but are subject to change.  Saturdays are also part of the practice calendar.  Athletes need to check their email or the team website on a daily basis for updates.  Athletes are NOT to anticipate practices being canceled.   The Coaching staff will adjust practices to accommodate individual situations (both as a group and/or individual athletes).

Non-Dress:  An athlete is considered non-dressed if they fail to come out in the proper clothing (including shoes) needed to practice in.  The coaching staff will have some extra workout clothes for clothes left at home emergencies, but NOT SHOES.  Note: if a non-coach adult deems you not fit for workout, a note identifying the reason for not-dressing is needed on the first day and a return to practice note is needed from that same adult before you can return to Practice.  If you are dreadfully sick, I recommend going to the health office at the end of 5th and getting sent home by the health clerk.  Just remember to have your parent call in to excuse your 6th period absence.

In order to help facilitate this, the following policy will be in effect (called the 2/3 Rule).  Athletes were notified about this rule on January 31, 2011 and it took effect the following day.

1.  An athlete is allowed to be non-dressed for any 2 practices (not including truancies) without it being excused by a coach.  Truancies count as 2 strikes.  Upon the third miss, the athlete will be removed from the team.

2.  An athlete may be non-dressed from any 3 practices as long as the athlete has notified the coach within 24 by either mouth, email or phone call.  Upon the 4th absence the athlete will be removed from the team.

Exceptions to 2/3 Rule: If an athletes clothes are stolen, then you need to see Mr. Anderle, report the theft, and bring written verification from Mr. Anderle that you have reported the theft to him. Religious reasons, doctor’s, coach’s, or other adult’s orders not to participate due to injury/illness, serious all day illness, administrative reasons and family emergencies also do not count against a student.  If you are not sure about a situation, call a coach and discuss the matter.

Non-Participant: An athlete is considered non-participant if a dressed athlete does not do a complete warm-up and at least half of the workout for that day.  Half of a workout can be defined as either half of the sets that were planned for the workout or half of the time that was set aside to practice skills specific to an event. Athletes who are delayed in reporting to practice or have their practice interrupted due to a school matter, (office visit, field trip, finishing up an assignment) will report to the field dressed and ready to begin/continue practice once they are finished with the school matter.

Exception to Non-Participant Rule:  If a coach modifies a practice for an athlete due to illness, injury, or lack of prerequisite fitness after the practice has begun.  If you are not sure about a situation, call a coach and discuss the matter.

An athlete who is recorded as Non-Dressed for ANY REASON (excused, unexcused, or exception) is also considered a Non-Participant.  A dressed athlete can only be considered a Non-Participant.

To help enforce the idea that Practice is Important, the following policy will be in effect.

1.  An athlete who is Non-Participant twice during the time between dual meets will miss the next dual meet due to being unprepared to compete.  An athlete who is Non-Participant twice during the week of an invitational will miss the invitational due to being unprepared to compete.  If the situation becomes chronic, the athlete risks being removed from the team.

2.  An athlete who is Non-Participant during a practice of an event that is ONLY Practiced once early in the week will not compete in that event at the next meet due to being unprepared to compete in that event. (This mostly affects the 4 x 1 relay, but also can affect the jumping events.)  If the situation becomes chronic, then the athlete will no longer be considered a participant for the event.

Bottom Line:  Practice is important in order for you to have a successful season.  BE THERE!
